Giles Blatta and His Secret Passages is a light and sound installation consisting of: three metal objects, two carpets, LED lamps and speakers. Three metal objects resembling cuboids are colored in black and small openings are made on their surfaces (a narrow linear slit and a small hole). These objects are placed on two carpets while, inside them, LED lamps and speakers are enclosed. The installation projects light from the open space on the metal objects as well as pre-recorded sounds of cleaning and washing. The basis of this work lays in its title which suggests an imaginary character called Giles Blatta. “Invisible” to the viewer and “perceived” only through sound, Giles is the “hidden tenant” of the installation. His actions compile different means of compulsive cleaning and are, in fact, orchestrated/recorded beforehand by the artist (sounds of: sweeping, scrubbing, dusting and washing hands). Being played in a continual loop with small pauses, these recorded actions become repetitive, thus, emphasizing the schizoid nature of Giles Blatta. In turn, the whole installation functions as a simulacrum of sorts where the composition of elements becomes more allusive with the inclusion of sound. Furthermore, the physical parts of the installation are also allegoric; metal objects may be understood as basement doors sealing a “space” beneath the two carpets. On the other hand, carpets suggest a household environment that, in this context, becomes a contrast to metal objects. Here, a carpet evoking comfort is misplaced and estranged – covered with heavy forms that lead nowhere. The final ambient created by the installation is a repeating cycle of cleaning sounds followed by lights. However, the notion of cleaning is applied to a wider space, that of the state, which, in some individuals, provokes this compulsion to “change” or “repair it”. Giles is a “lost reactionary” that seeks to cleanse the spaces of his existence and, by perpetuating the cleansing process, he ultimately dreams of escape, of climbing outside his underground and, finally, facing the system that defaced him. In this installation, the concept of Giles Blatta is an archetype for discriminated individuals or those, forced by different governments to a secluded and burdened existence. Inside a certain state human identity and liberty are constantly questioned.
